"Wild Burros from the Gold Rush", Digital Print by American Artist Matthew Schwartz.
The first donkeys came to the Americas on supply ships with the second voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1495. These are their wild descendants and the descendants of the domesticated donkeys that were abandoned to the wilderness after the Gold Rush.
In the West, burros accompanied explorers and pioneers, often surviving harsh conditions and their human “owners.” Burros were primarily used as pack animals by prospectors in the Southwest during the Gold Rush era.
