Jacob's Biography:
I am an autodidactic fine art photographer born in the Netherlands, with extensive experience in analog photography, developing and printing in my own darkroom, as well as working with digital cameras.
At the age of twelve, my father gave me my first camera. It was his old camera, an Agfa Click I. Thus he could prevent that I, especially during holidays, continuously asked him to allow me to take a photo with his camera. I still have that Agfa Click I, and a few of the first photos I made with it …
At the age of sixteen I bought my first SLR (Single-lens reflex) camera, at the age of seventeen I wanted to learn to develop and print my own black and white films. Since I didn’t have the money to buy an enlarger, I built one myself of wood and used the lens of my camera.
In the past few years, after quitting my demanding job in facilities management and real estate, I focused on simple, natural living. This new way of living is reflected in my work; I am exploring the simpleness and the stillness of pure, natural environments with my camera.
I was born in Gouda, the Netherlands. I currently live with my wife and dog in a small farmhouse in the Danish Thy region in North West Jutland. The special light and colours in this coastal area of Denmark inspired me to develop my current style.
Artist statement:
Daily life in the western world is overflowing with stimuli that continuously force our senses to the limit of their abilities. In my photographs I seek to capture the simplicity and tranquility of natural environments and to share my experience of nature’s soul.
I paint with light. My camera is my brush. My work is often described by others as abstract, impressionist and painterly. My style is distinct and pure, characterized by coarse grain, overexposure, soft focus and the effects created by how I move my camera during the shot.
I like experimenting and exploring the limits of what the camera can handle. I work in nature where I immerse myself in the sights, colors and sounds of natural surroundings. I am a purist and choose to create the abstract and impressionist effects as seen in my photographs, using only camera settings.
Photo software is used only to remove dust or to adjust brightness, contrast and cropping to improve my compositions. I do not use digital editing tools or filters. The titles of my photos are an important element of the entire work of art. In addition, I often write a short poem to a photo.
My photographs are being exhibited around the world and have been sold to collectors in The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Australia and the Unites States of America. Participated in five exhibitions in the past three years.
A beautiful autumn morning, the first sun rays break through the morning haze.
Veils of light descend from the trees. Two figures seem to arise from the mist, an illusion?
‘Riding through veils of Illusion’ is one of a series of four impressionist photos I made Autumn 2016 in the vicinity of my hometown Nijmegen, The Netherlands. The series is made in a small forest near a canal.
‘Riding through veils of illusion’ is also available as limited edition print with borders, printed on cotton paper. The prints are available in various sizes.
Wings of the night:
The night floats through the valleys,
slowly it soars
to the crown of the mountains.
On the occasion of the vernissage of the exhibition ‘El Duende’, July 2017 in Bellano near Lake Como – Italy, I have made two series of photos in the mountains and valleys in the vicinity of Bellano. When making those series, I inspired myself by the theme of the exhibition: looking for the spirit of mountains and valleys.
Duende has been identified as the spirit of evocation, physical and emotional response elicited by art.
Having the Duende is equivalent to that thrill that makes you smile or cry in front of a particularly expressive artistic performance.
The term is often used in folk music in particular in Flamenco, during the most intense performance.
‘Wings of the night’ is a photo in the series ‘The spirits of the mountains’, and is also available as limited edition print without borders, printed on cotton paper. The prints are available in various sizes. Please send me a message/email for more information if you want another size or without border.
Jacob made the photo ‘Rhythms of the past’ in the old city of his home town Nijmegen, The Netherlands. The street on the photo is called ‘Begijnenstraat’.
This old part of the city of Nijmegen is called ‘Benedenstad’ (Down Town), because it is literally 5 to 10 meters below the adjacent city center. Winding streets with buildings of sometimes hundreds of years old, take you to the past.
The old facades of the houses in this district each have their own rhythm. The designers of the past were much less bound to rules than architects of this age. Each facade tells its own story.
In the light of an early morning, old and new blends to a ethereal world.
Floating on the morning light:
The flowers of the Brunnera macrophylla
When I make photos of flowers, I try to get as close as possible and give you a view of the flowers that you have never seen before. All the flowers I photograph are common in north western Europe and can be seen in gardens, parks and forests. But the view I present you in my photos, is exceptional!
Into a new day:
Hovering into a new day, let yourself be carried by the wind.
Let go and trust the waves to bring you what you need.
It is early in the morning, the seagulls go looking for their breakfast …
‘Into a new day’ is a photo in a series of 5 photos of gulls in search for food in the surf. The series is part of the gallery ‘Stray birds’.
I made this photo December 2016 on a cold stormy morning at the beach near Agger, a small town on the North Sea coast of northwest Jutland, Denmark.
Birth of the night
In the fire of the sunset,
the day dies
for the night to be born
‘Birth of the night’ is a photo in the series ‘Born from emptiness’, part of the gallery ‘Untouched land‘.
It is a photo in a triptych that I made during a beautiful sunset in nature reserve Overasseltse & Hatertse Vennen, close to my hometown Nijmegen in The Netherlands.
It is a small but beautiful nature reserve, a landscape of fens, small groups of trees, heather and grassland.
The other photos in this triptych are ‘Dreamless sleep’ and ‘Into a white night’.
For the other two photos in this triptych, see my other artworks.
I dreamed myself a path last night...
