"Ye Olde York Inne”, Watercolour on Paper Painting by Filipino Artist Edcel Cabalan

In the English city of York, there is a pub called Ye Olde Starre Inne. In the mid-16th century, a timber-framed building was built as the pub's main block, and a wing to its left was added in about 1600. As of 1644, it had become an inn called "The Starre", located off the north side of Stonegate behind a coaching yard. As a result, it holds the record for displaying the earliest date of its license in York. Soldiers were treated at the Inn after the Battle of Marston Moor.

Edward Thompson inherited the pub in 1683 after selling it for £250 in 1662. The pub's landlord, Thomas Bulman, 1733, agreed to attach a sign to two shops on Stonegate to be visible from both shops. Since then, a sign has been announcing the pub across the street.

In the early 18th century, the pub was extended. When the railway came, a new building was added to the coaching yard in the 1840s, and a passageway now leads under part of it to the pub. The pub was situated behind stables, accessed from Duncombe Place, so visiting actors and circus performers often gathered to perform.

Painting inspired by Ye Olde Starre Inne, one of York’s most historic pubs, is a Grade II listed building said to date back to 1644, the year of the siege of York by the Roundheads, when it was first licensed. The inn does have the longest continuous license of any pub in York, and it claims to be the oldest.

You cannot fail to see the inn’s sign (from 1733), which proudly hangs over and across Stonegate, directing you on through the narrow snickelway to a courtyard and finally the inn. The inn’s spectacular views of the upper part of York Minster make it worth visiting, if for that alone, especially when the Minster is floodlit, but you’ll be tempted in to try its huge choice of real ales and good old English food.
